The use of tags in the Ann Arbor District Library catalogue was thought provoking. Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that a lot of users find traditional library catalogues hard to use. Clicking on tags and then limiting the results using simple drop down menus may improve access for users used to browsing on the internet. It is perhaps more suitable for browsing in a public library catalogue than for purposive searching in an academic library catalogue, though.
In a sense, what we as librarians think of tags is irrelevant: the internet is beyond our control and develops fast and in highly unpredictable ways. Maybe we need to observe, and adopt developments which appear useful, as we are doing in the 23 Things programme!
I haven't added many additional tags to my blog entries, because the entries are fairly brief and focussed on the topics.
